There is a little bit of everything for everyone in Skagway. If you’re looking to get outdoors to enjoy wildlife, our Glacier Point Wilderness Safari is a great option. If you’re looking to learn a little history and enjoy a scenic ride in a vintage passenger train car, then the White Pass Railroad Summit Excursion is the perfect Skagway tour for your party. The nearby Denver Glacier is only accessible via helicopter if you would like to tour Skagway’s glacier and possibly enjoy a glacier, helicopter, or dog sledding tour. To experience the natural wonders around Skagway, take one of our many trips up into the Yukon Territory of Canada for some of the most magnificent sightseeing Alaska has to offer.
Known as a gateway town to the Yukon gold rush, it was on August 17, 1896, when gold was first discovered 600 miles from Skagway in the Klondike region of Canada’s Yukon Territory. The following year, hundreds of gold-seekers flocked to Skagway to begin their journeys North. The path the miners took to seek gold would eventually create the foundation for one of the most popular Skagway shore excursions – the White Pass Yukon Railroad Summit Excursion.
By 1898, Skagway’s population had boomed to 8,000. Construction began on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, and the infamous con man “Soapy” Smith who swindled prospectors and controlled a comprehensive spy network was shot and killed.
With the completion of the railroad in 1900 and the once prosperous gold rush nearly over, Skagway was formally incorporated as a city until 2007 when Skagway was re-incorporated as a borough.
The current population of Skagway fluctuates right around 1,000 residents. During the summer tourist season, the first-class borough sees more than 1 million visitors looking to enjoy the great outdoors, history, and natural wonders through many amazing shore excursions and tours that Skagway has to offer.
“The white pass railway tour was beyond amazing, such a breathtaking experience! I strongly recommend booking with Alaska shore excursions versus the cruise lines. Not only does this give back to a local company, but we had a much better experience. We did not have lines to wait in, and our cars were not packed full, so we could actually move around and venture outside to fully experience the beautiful landscape.”
“This was one of the major highlights of our trip. With seven people in our party ages 11-78 it's sometimes hard to find something that is exciting for everyone. This excursion had so many amazing pieces wrapped into one event. The helicopter flight over the mountains and glaciers was spectacular alone but combining it with landing on a glacier then learning about the history of the Alaskan sled dog from Jeremy was so informative and fascinating. He really helped us all understand the specific challenges of the Iditarod race and unique abilities these dogs have to persevere in unimaginable circumstances. They are amazing creatures! We were able to meet the dogs and love on them then watch an exhibition of their skill working together as a team. One of the highlights amidst this outstanding tour was the sled dog puppies that we got to snuggle. It was a favorite for everyone in our group! Overall this was our favorite experience in Alaska!!”
“This was the highlight of our Alaskan cruise. Our guides were hilarious AND knowledgeable. This trip leads you into a secluded area of Alaska reachable only by boat/bus/foot/canoe for an up close view of the Davidson glacier. We even got to hold a small iceberg that was floating in the water. If you are looking for a well-guided adventure this trip, book now.”
