Excursion Overview

Come adventure on this multi-stop scenic tour through Sitka, Alaska

Meet with your skilled local guide at the Harrigan Centennial Hall as you climb aboard a full-sized passenger van heading south down along Silver Bay. Your guide will point out local flora and fauna such as bald eagles or Sitka Black Tail Deer.

Your first stop on your Journey will be at The Fortress of the Bears. This non-profit facility is home to 7 native bear rescues, 4 of which are Coastal Brown Bears and 3 Black Bears. You will get within 25 feet of these native giants and listen to their stories of hardship and recovery.

After you spend time with our bears, you will head over to The Alaskan Raptor Center. This rehabilitation center for birds of prey is home to multiple species of eagles and owls. Make sure to check out the famous Flight Training Center where you can see bald eagles regaining their skills of flight, well on their way to recovery and release back to the wild.

The grand finale of this tour is a stop at the Sitka National Historical Park. This protected stretch of rainforest is a historical piece of land due to its collection of totem poles, the 19th century battle of the Sheeta Kwan Kiksadi Clan, and the gorgeous cultural center with onsite interpreters. Here you can choose to walk along the winding trails and paths, admire the totem poles, learn all about the occupation of Russian American troops, or inspect the exhibits and demonstrations about carving, fur, beading, and metalworking.

This trip was amazing, our tour guide Chris was funny and informative. Our first stop was to see the birds of prey and their rehab facility. The birds were beautiful and very active. Our second stop was to the Fortress of the Bears and the bears were the highlight of the trip, they were huge and amazing. There was one bear being very playful, running and playing with a ball right in front of us. The last stop was to see the salmon run and see them fighting to get up river. The timing was perfect for this. From there we walked to the totems. The artwork and detail in these totems is amazing.

The excursion was great! It was wonderful to see the care and concern being shown to these animals, helping them survive after injury, illness, etc. My husband was very excited about this excursion. He had never seen a golden eagle but can now mark that off his list of must-sees! I had read that this excursion was a bit rushed and I would agree with that. A little extra time at both the Raptor Centre and Fortress of the Bear would be nice. If it's busy, a half hour is not enough time. We were lucky and the port was relatively quiet that day. But it was still hard to navigate all the people to get a good view sometimes. Regardless, we are glad we took part in this excursion and were able to make a purchase at each to help out their continued efforts.

We saw the raptor rehabilitation center, the fortress of bears, coastal scenery, the coastal rain forest and national park. According to reports from other cruise guests, we saw more things on this tour than we would have seen on the excursion included in the cruise price, so it was worth the money. It would have been better if it had not been raining, but it was still a good tour. The high point of the tour for me was to see the trout running in the stream in the rain forest. There were thousands of them trying to swim up stream. I've never seen anything like it before and it was worth the price of the tour in itself.
