About Juneau Whale Watching Tours

FAQs about Whale Watching in Juneau

Can I see whales in Juneau?

Juneau is the best place for whale watching in Alaska. Seeing whales on your tour is 100% guaranteed. The nutrient-rich waters in Favorite Channel and Saginaw Channel in Juneau are among the best places to see humpback whales in the entire world. Our top excursion is the Juneau whale watching tour.

What are the best whale watching tours?

The best whale watching tours in Juneau are:

When is the best time to see whales in Juneau?

You can see whales in Juneau from April to November, but the best time for whale watching is June through August. In Late July, you begin to see Bubble Net Feeding, when 10-12 whales jump out of the water at once.

What types of whales will I see?

Juneau is a feeding ground for humpback whales, and there are so many whales that we are able to offer 100% guaranteed sightings.  The waterways attract the whales all summer long, before they make the long journey to the warming waters of Mexico and Hawaii to breed. There is also an opportunity to see Orca, commonly called Killer Whales, on these tours as well. Orca sightings are very rare as they are very transient and move quickly through the waterways in Southeast Alaska.

Why should I choose Juneau for whale watching?

One benefit of whale watching in Juneau is that the area has abundant wildlife and the landscape can include views of glaciers (including Mendenhall Glacier) and lighthouses depending on the exact location of the whales. Whale sightings are guaranteed here.

Where else can I view whales on my Alaska cruise?

You can also whale watch in Icy Strait Point, where seeing whales is also guaranteed.

Reviews for our Juneau Whale Watching Tours

Here's what customers had to say about our Juneau whale watching tours.

Juneau Whale Watching Tour:

“Awesome Awesome tour!! We ended up getting to see humpback whales and Orcas! The tour guide did a great job of finding the best spots to observe the whales. Our tour guide even was able to find a spot near the shore where we watched a mother Orca teaching her baby Orca how to lunge feed, which was an amazing experience! We learned so much about whales and saw so many types of ocean life. We also saw sea lions basking in the sun on a bouy in the ocean. Don't miss this great tour!”

Ashley

Mendenhall Glacier Whale Watching Tour:

“WOW!!! A first class operation from start to finish and worth every penny! The time at the Mendenhall Glacier was great but the whale watching was amazing! The crew--Mark, Steph and Taylor were incredible! They love their job and it shows! To hear their excitement with each whale appearance made us know that we had chosen the best tour available. I wish I could give them 10 stars because they deserve it! If I ever get the opportunity to get back to Juneau, I will definitely sign up for another tour.”

Pam

Whale Watching & Mendenhall Glacier Private Charter:

“Perfect!! We had a large group cruising together. The price per person for this private tour was only a few dollars more than the cruise ship tour (which packs people onto a boat). It was definitely worth it! It was everyone s favorite activity during our entire Alaska trip!”

Whale Watching, Mendenhall Glacier, & Salmon Bake Tour:

“This was a fabulous excursion for a day in Juneau. We booked independently (and saved significantly from those who booked directly from my cruise line) and felt like we saw all the best of Juneau. The Whale Watching boat was incredible--we saw so many whales and the captain and naturalist were friendly and informative. The glacier was beautiful, and we had time to hike down to the big waterfall beside the glacier. The salmon bake was a good meal, and the kids (ages 5-11) had a great time spying the salmon swimming in the lake, panning for gold, and roasting marshmallows over a campfire. I highly recommend this one!”

Whale Watching & Salmon Bake Tour:

“We had a great time and saw lots of whales and some great views of glaciers in the distance. Our guides on the whale watching part were fantastic and very knowledgeable. The bus drivers were great too! The salmon bake was delicious and it was nice to walk around the grounds to see the waterfall. Thanks!”
