Musher's camps in Skagway are a top activity featured in our Skagway cruise port guide.
Dog sledding tours typically cost 5-0 per person. Tours that visit musherÃs camps in the forest without snow are more affordable, while excursions that include helicopter tours and dog sledding on a glacier cost more.
Our Skagway dog sledding tours do not have age restrictions or a minimum age requirement. One tour, the Mendenhall Glacier Dog Sledding & Helicopter Tour from Juneau, allows lap children (under 2 years old) for free.
Mid-May to mid-August are the best times to do glacier dog sledding. However, if you would like to try winter dogsledding, through snow covered forests, November to March is the best time.
Glacier dogsledding requires the hard work of van drivers, pilots, guides, and mushers in order to create this premium experience for guests. Mushers and their dog teams live on the glacier throughout the season, and the price of these tours reflect the proper compensation for their time.
Yes there is a weight limit for some dog sledding tours. Forest-based musher's camp tours typically do not have weight limits, while tours that include dog sledding in the snow do tend to have weight limits. Guests over 250 lbs should contact Alaska Shore Excursions for more details.
The glacier dog sledding season typically begins in early May and ends in late August when conditions on the glacier are safe for dogs and their mushers. Forest-based dog sledding tours are available throughout the year. Tours are typically 2-4 hours in total, including transportation.

Here's what our customers had to say about Dog Sledding in Skagway.
Skagway Dog Sledding & Helicopter Tour
“I wish everyone could experience this excursion. Trust me, it is worth the money. The helicopter ride up to the base camp gave spectacular views and once we arrived, the musher's brought us over to their pack of dogs. We were able to pet and love on each one. Seeing their excitement as they or other packs began to get chained up for the ride was amazing. They LOVE what they do and were born for that. I'm a dog lover and you can tell these dogs are well take care of and to witness their passion and excitement to take us for a ride was pure joy and exhilarating. Each person gets a chance to stand up and lead the dogs. Well, honestly the musher is doing the leading :) but to stand up and pretend was a blast. If you're torn between excursions, choose this once in a lifetime experience!”

From the thrilling helicopter ride with a magnificent view of the rugged Alaskan landscape to the incredible joy of dog sledding across a glacier, this was the best experience of our Alaskan visit. Talk about doing something out of the ordinary, this was it. Thanks to Ryan....and especially to Wingo....our lead dog....what a great experience.”

“We had such a fun time at the musher's camp. The staff were excellent and shared their knowledge of the dogs, puppies, and history of sled dog racing. The drive up to the camp was very scenic and they stopped on our way back to the port so we could take pictures. Overall great experience.”
