FAQs about Dog Sledding

When is the best month to go dog sledding in Alaska?

Mid-May to mid-August are the best times to do glacier dog sledding. However, if you would like to try winter dogsledding, through snow covered forests, November to March is the best time.

Why is dog sledding so expensive?

Glacier dogsledding requires the hard work of van drivers, pilots, guides, and mushers in order to create this premium experience for guests. Mushers and their dog teams live on the glacier throughout the season, and the price of these tours reflect the proper compensation for their time.

Is there a weight limit for dog sledding?

Yes there is a weight limit for some dog sledding tours. Forest-based musher's camp tours typically do not have weight limits, while tours that include dog sledding in the snow do tend to have weight limits. Guests over 250 lbs should contact Alaska Shore Excursions for more details.

How long does dog sledding last?

The glacier dog sledding season typically begins in early May and ends in late August when conditions on the glacier are safe for dogs and their mushers. Forest-based dog sledding tours are available throughout the year. Tours are typically 2-4 hours in total, including transportation.

What's the best age for kids to try dog sledding?

Dog sledding is open to all ages! It is probably the most fun for children who are elementary aged and older, but we take infants and toddlers on our tours regularly as well.

Is dog sledding safe for kids?

Yes, dog sledding is a safe and fun experience for kids! We have children take our dog sledding tours regularly. They will stay with their parents during the whole tour experience and will be supervised at all times by an experienced tour guide or musher when interacting with the dogs. The dogs used for our tours are very friendly and are comfortable interacting with children.

Is dog sledding bumpy?

Yes, dogsledding can be a fast-paced experience; forest based mushers' camps sled dogs race quickly over dirt paths, which can jostle guests. However, glacier-based dogsledding is a smoother, more relaxed experience, with less bounce.

Reviews for our Juneau Dog Sledding Tours

Here's what customers had to say about dog sledding in Juneau.

Juneau Dog Sledding Tour:

“My family and I had an amazing time on the glacier helicopter and dog sledding tour. They provide waterproof over boots to use while on the glacier. Amazing views of the glacier and valley as you fly to the dog camp. The dogs all looked happy and well cared for. We were encouraged to interact with the dogs, who were all friendly. We got to go on an exhilarating dog sled ride - they go much faster than I expected. We even got to interact with some 3 month old puppies. Definitely do not miss out on this amazing tour!”

Cindy

Extended Dog Sledding Tour:

“This excursion was absolutely amazing and something I will never forget. The helicopter pilot gave us a smooth ride and landing and great narration throughout. The dog sled camp was much larger than imagined and so great to see all of the dogs well cared for. The dogsled ride was the trip of a lifetime and 2 miles long. Got to hold a 2 month old puppy. Then on to the Herbert Glacier. Our pilot got out and walked with us and gave us a fantastic walking tour. Our helicopter was the only one on the glacier. It was all together the trip of a lifetime and well worth every penny spent. Can't say enough about this fantastic experience!”

Andrea

Dog Sled World & Glacier Helicopter Adventure:

“This was the one thing that was on my must do list. It exceeded my expectations. I absolutely loved it. Was not looking forward to the helicopter flight but it was so spectacular I forgot to be scared. Everything was done very professionally and fun as well. We were lucky to spend time with some 2 week old pups as well. The dogs were amazing and this will remain as one of my best days ever.”

Sue

Mendenhall Glacier Dog Sledding Tour:

“A+++!!! The short but sweet helicopter rides provided incredible views of Juneau and the surrounding mountains, and a breathtaking tour of the Mendendhall Glacier. The dog mushing camp was incredible to witness and the people working there were passionate and kind about their work, with people and dogs! The dog sledding was the highlight of our family's trip to Alaska and the views were spectacular the entire time. Highly recommend!”

Eric

Dog Sled Summer Camp:

“Excellent shore excursion in Juneau. Came in on a cruise ship and it was easy to find the check-in staff in downtown Juneau. Went on a bus driving up a steep mountain and reached the dog sled camp. The driver provided good commentary and answered questions. Dog camp was informative, learning about dog sledding and the Iditarod race, and had a lot of fun riding the sled and interacting with the sled dogs and some younger dogs. Loved holding the blue-eyed puppy at the end for a couple of minutes. The staff was dedicated and seemed passionate about dogs and dog racing. At the end, the bus dropped us off back in downtown Juneau at the specified time. Highly recommended and a highlight of my Alaskan cruise.”

Gordon

Juneau Musher’s Camp:

“This was our best time in Alaska! Everyone we met there was a real dog lover and the dogs are treated with great care and respect. Our guide, who had been there around one year, was very knowledgeable and the information we learned was riveting. Being able to interact with the dogs and the PUPPIES (!) was priceless. I could have stayed there all day! Booking through Alaska Excursions was easy and reasonably priced. I definitely recommend them!”
