About Alaska Dog Sledding Tours

FAQs about Dog Sledding

When is the best month to go dog sledding in Alaska?

Mid-May to mid-August are the best times to do glacier dog sledding. However, if you would like to try winter dogsledding, through snow covered forests, November to March is the best time.

Why is dog sledding so expensive?

Glacier dogsledding requires the hard work of van drivers, pilots, guides, and mushers in order to create this premium experience for guests. Mushers and their dog teams live on the glacier throughout the season, and the price of these tours reflect the proper compensation for their time.

Is there a weight limit for dog sledding?

Yes there is a weight limit for some dog sledding tours. Forest-based musher's camp tours typically do not have weight limits, while tours that include dog sledding in the snow do tend to have weight limits. Guests over 250 lbs should contact Alaska Shore Excursions for more details.

How long does dog sledding last?

The glacier dog sledding season typically begins in early May and ends in late August when conditions on the glacier are safe for dogs and their mushers. Forest-based dog sledding tours are available throughout the year. Tours are typically 2-4 hours in total, including transportation.
