After a convenient hotel pickup, your guide will take you on a 50-mile journey along the Seward Highway, one of the most scenic drives in the United States. As you wind through the stunning Turnagain Arm, stop for amazing photo opportunities and take in the awe-inspiring views of the mountains, ocean, and wildlife. The first stop is the Portage Valley, part of the Chugach National Forest, where you'll experience the wonder of massive hanging glaciers before arriving at the Portage Glacier Lodge. Enjoy a delicious lunch and take a leisurely stroll through the surrounding rainforest, soaking in the fresh air and natural beauty before setting off on a one-hour cruise on Portage Lake to get up close to the towering Portage Glacier. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating insights about the glacier and the surrounding landscape, offering plenty of chances for once-in-a-lifetime photos.

The adventure continues at the nearby Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, where you’ll spend 90 minutes to two hours discovering and learning about Alaska's native wildlife. On a guided tour of the 250-acre facility, you'll have the chance to see bears, moose, bison, and other iconic animals up close. Afterward, you'll have some free time to explore on your own and visit your favorite animals. Journey back along the Seward Highway, and see more stunning vistas before being dropped off at your hotel, leaving you with incredible memories and plenty of time to enjoy Anchorage in the evening.

  • Parties with children requiring car seats must provide and install the seats themselves. Please leave a comment during checkout if you are traveling with a child requiring a car seat.
  • Please note that some of the stops along the tour are not paved. Guests must be able to climb two steps into and out of the tour vans.

Duration: 8 hours (Roundtrip from local Anchorage Hotels)

  • Depart Anchorage at 10:30 am after hotel pickups (starting up to 45 minutes prior)
  • 1.5 - 1.75 hours - scenic, narrated ride down the Seward Highway and into the Portage Valley with photo stops
  • 45 - 60 minutes - lunch at the Portage Glacier Lodge (not included in the price of this tour)
  • 10 minutes - transportation to the Portage Glacier Cruise
  • 1 hour - Portage Glacier Cruise
  • 20 minutes - travel to Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
  • 1.5 - 2 hours - guided tour of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, including 30 minutes free exploration time
  • 1 hour - return transportation to Anchorage
  • 15 - 45 minutes - guest drop-offs

  • This tour is limited mobility accessible. Guests must be able to climb 2 steps into and out of the tour van. Please note that some of the stops along the tour are not paved. There is limited space for collapsible wheelchairs and walkers. There is no storage available for motorized scooters/wheelchairs. Please leave a comment during checkout if accommodations for collapsible equipment will be required on tour. If the operator is unaware beforehand of necessary accommodations, they may not be able to accommodate guests day of.

Guests must be able to climb 2 steps into and out of the tour van. If you are comfortable getting in and out of the tour van, our tour provider can accommodate guests with collapsible wheelchairs/walkers.

There are no age restrictions on this tour however, you must bring your own car seats for your children.

Non-alcoholic beverages in closable containers and snacks are allowed on tour.

The tour will only require at most 10 minutes of walking across several stops. At the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, your guide can pull up to the enclosures and guests can see many animals through the large windows. Other times, guests choose to walk and stretch their legs so they can get closer to view the animals. The van is always available. In case of inclement weather, it’s always possible to jump in and out of the van.

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is home to a large variety of brown bear, black bear, moose, caribou, wolves, musk ox, lynx, and wood bison. You might see many or most of these when you visit. Our guides are also always on the lookout for wild animals during the day. Common sightings include moose, black bears and bald eagles.

Expect temperatures ranging from the mid 50’s to the mid 70’s F (10 - 25 C), or warmer.

It is recommended to dress in layers and always prepare for rain and wind. There is plenty of room in the vans to bring an extra jacket and hat. It’s always advisable to wear sunglasses and bring along sunscreen and insect repellent.
