Excursion Overview

Two hours of kayaking on Mendenhall Lake followed by an Alaskan salmon bake!

Travel by kayak with your knowledgeable guide to visit the Mendenhall Glacier just outside downtown Juneau. Leading a small group of kayakers, your guide is ready to share and teach you about the glacier and surrounding area. Breathtaking nature surrounds you and native wildlife is abundant in Southeast Alaska, so keep your eyes open and head on a swivel!

The kayaks are stable, two-person kayaks and guests are outfitted with raingear and life jackets. Prior kayaking experience is not required however, moderate to good physical health is recommended as guests must paddle for approximately 2 hours and climb in/out of the kayak with limited assistance.

Paddle the lake for two hours and build up an appetite for the Gold Creek Salmon Bake. Local musicians and a festive mood set the scene for this Alaskan tradition.

Gold Creek Salmon Bake

The traditional Alaskan feast features Alaskan-caught wild salmon, Bonanza barbequed ribs, Chilkoot baked beans, Tongass wild-rice pilaf, Alyeska au gratin potatoes and a robust selection of other sides, salads and beverages. Beer and wine are available for purchase. Bring on the blueberry cake for dessert!

Requirements:

  • The minimum weight is 40 lbs to fit into the required life jacket. The maximum weight is approximately 275 lbs, dependent on waist size to be comfortable in the kayak cockpit. The cockpit is 35” front-to-back x 17” hip-to-hip.
  • Moderate to good physical activity is required. This tour is not recommended for guests with back problems or limited upper body strength.
  • Guests must paddle for approximately 2 hours and climb in/out of the kayak with limited assistance.

Duration: 5 hours (Roundtrip from cruise ship terminal.)

  • 30 minutes - narrated transfer to Mendenhall Lake
  • 15 minutes - outfitting, risk acknowledgment, split into groups of ability levels, equipment orientation, and restroom break
  • 2 hours - Guided paddle excursion with interpretation of flora, fauna, and natural history
  • 30 minutes - de-gear and transportation to the salmon bake
  • 1 hour - at Gold Creek salmon bake (you can leave at your leisure on one of our shuttles running every 15~20 minutes)
  • 30 minutes - transportation back to downtown Juneau

Participants should be prepared for inclement weather and dress in warm layers. Raingear is provided; however, guests are encouraged to bring their own to ensure maximum comfort while on tour. Guests are encouraged to wear gloves, light layers, and an extra pair of socks in case yours get wet in the boots.
