A challenging hike through lush rainforests for unforgettable views of the glacier

Just outside of Juneau, take a short drive and begin an invigorating 6-7 mile hike through the Tongass National Forest. Wind your way through the forest where you'll emerge and find panoramic views of the beautiful Mendenhall Glacier. Your expert guide will lead the way as you navigate a trail that includes 800 feet of elevation gain, through rocky, uneven, and slippery terrain.

Guests need to bring and wear their own sturdy hiking boots with good support. All guests will need to hike with a backpack the entire journey. You will be outfitted with a rain jacket, rain pants, rubber boots, and waterproof backpack. While no experience is necessary, guests should be in good physical shape for this invigorating adventure.

Worried about the pace?

Guests are encourage to book the Juneau Privately Guided Mendenhall Glacier Trek if a slower or faster pace is desired. This is very important to consider. If your pace significantly inhibits the pace of the group, another guide would need to be hired to assist and a fee of $250 per person would be assessed.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 4 participants is required to operate this tour. Should the minimum not be met, the local tour provider will contact your party accordingly
  • Minimum age: 8 years old
  • Guests must be able to hike for at least 4 hours/7 miles round-trip on steep, rocky, slippery, uneven terrain carrying a 10lbs backpack, and provide their own hiking boots with adequate ankle support
  • Not recommended for guests with limited mobility, heart, and respiratory issues
  • Pregnant guests are not permitted
  • Signed liability waiver

Duration: 6 hours (Roundtrip from cruise ship terminal.)

  • 30 minutes - Van transport to the trailhead
  • 15 minutes - Gear outfitting and safety orientation
  • 2 hours - Trail hike to Mendenhall glacier viewpoint
  • 30 minutes - Break at the viewpoint for photos and snacks
  • 2 hours. - Trail hike back to parking lot
  • 45 minutes - De-gear and return van transport

Frequently Asked Questions

Due to the intensity of this tour, we recommend injured guests do not take this tour. Tour guides may deny participation on the day of the tour if they are made aware of any physical problems that would compromise the group's safety or progress.

Due to recent flooding and glacial ice erosion, this tour does not include walking on the glacier. Instead, this tour allows guests to hike the Tongass National Forest to an amazing view point for panoramic views of the Mendenhall Glacier, Nugget Falls and surrounding mountains.

Bald eagles, herons, shorebirds, artic terns and waterfowl are all common sights, however this is not a designated wildlife tour and specific wildlife cannot be guaranteed.

The temperature really depends on the weather, but expect the temperature near the glacier to be 5-10 degrees cooler.

Food and drink are allowed during this tour, but there are no waste bins, so you are responsible for transporting your own garbage.

Weather depending, you are encouraged to wear gloves and light layers. We'll provide you with waterproof jackets, pants, and rubber boots.
