Experience Sitka on foot, surrounded by rainforest, ocean views, and rich natural history.

This guided nature hike invites travelers to slow down and experience Sitka at a more meaningful pace, surrounded by fresh coastal air and lush Alaskan landscapes. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, guests explore iconic locations such as Starrigavan Recreation Area, Magic Island, Sandy Beach, Sitka National Historic Totem Park, Whale Park, and Japonski Island while learning about the region’s ecology, wildlife, and cultural history.

Traveling along Sitka’s 14-mile road system, the tour provides access to a variety of landscapes and viewpoints without long drives or strenuous hiking. Focused on education, appreciation, and connection to nature, this experience offers a peaceful alternative to crowded attractions and a deeper understanding of why Sitka continues to captivate nature lovers.

This tour is typically available from May through September. Our excursions were designed for cruise ship passengers but are available to everyone.

Requirements:

  • Sitka Courtesy Shuttle: To reduce wait times, all guests are now required to book their complimentary shuttle to downtown Sitka in advance! Depending on your tour time, you will either need to reserve a shuttle ticket to meet at Harrigan Centennial Hall or reserve a shuttle ticket to return you to your cruise ship. Detailed instructions will be provided on your finalized ticket voucher. Please reserve your shuttle at least one hour before your scheduled tour departure to allow enough time for check-in and to ensure you're ready for your tour.
  • Guests should be comfortable traversing uneven terrain
  • Not recommended for guests who are pregnant or have back problems
  • Minimum age of 7 years old to participate

Duration: Approximately 2.5-3 hours (transportation varies by departure time)

  • Tour duration is dependent on trail conditions, weather, and the pace of the group.

Meeting Instructions:

  • Morning tours depart from the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal, while afternoon departures depart from Harrigan Centennial Hall. Fully detailed instructions are included on your finalized ticket vouchers.

The hike involves traversing uneven terrain with occasional elevation gain. This excursion is not recommended for guests who are pregnant, have back problems, use wheelchairs, scooters, or walkers.

This tour is not recommended for guests younger than 7 years old.

Backpacks, small bags, and purses are allowed on this tour.

Sitka is a rainforest. The recommendation is to wear waterproof clothing, good walking shoes, a hat, a refillable water bottle, and sunscreen. Umbrellas are available to use during the tour, though we recommend you bring rain protection for the rest of your time in town.

This tour runs rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe. Please be prepared with appropriate clothing for your time in port.

Wildlife sightings are always possible in Alaska, however we cannot guarantee them. Guests may see birds, eagles, coastal rainforest plants, and signs of local wildlife on this tour.
