Excursion Overview

Get in some freshwater fishing with the possibility of bear watching!

Come along on a scenic drive and freshwater fishing excursion in beautiful Hoonah. With abundant wildlife in this area, keep your cameras ready for potential wildlife sightings. Brown bears, bald eagles, blacktail deer, ducks, geese, and more are often sighted throughout Southeast Alaska's rainforest.

As with everything in the wilds of Alaska, the fish runs are wild and seasonal. Depending on the time of year, the drive may be 20-40 minutes to the fishing destination. Dolly Varden Char and Cutthroat Trout can be found throughout the summer season. Pink and Chum Salmon run from late June through September, and Silver Salmon from late August through October.

You will be outfitted with fishing gear including waders (to keep your lower half dry), tackle, and spinning rods. Several fly fishing rods are available should that be your preference. This excursion is strictly catch and release fishery. The fish are a valuable resource and must be preserved for decades to come. The summer season runs from May through September.

Chris and Jack picked us up, brought us to their gear locker in town and got us outfitted with waders and boots. We drove out of town a few miles to one of their spots and started fishing for Dolly Varden. My son caught the first one within minutes. The four of us caught 10 Dolly's withing a couple of hours. Chris gave us some good information about the local wildlife, from Sitka deer to brown bears. This was a great time and I look forward to going back later in the year to hopefully catch some salmon.

Chris was a great guide to lead us on this excursion. Very patient with the less experienced fishing folks. Fished in a beautiful creek - unfortunately for us and we knew this - the salmon weren't running in mid-June. We had a good time catching Dolly Varden and coastal cutthroats. Did get kind of crowded trying to fish the good holes with five people but that's okay.

Great fishing trip at Icy Straight Point Here's how it works: *walk off the cruise ship. Depending which dock you're at, you may need to take the free green gondola(or walk 10 minutes)to get to the excursions meeting spot. *you're picked up by guide Chris in a van. * you're taken to be fitted for hip waders. *drive to remote location, takes around 20 minutes *hike 10 minutes to stream *go fishing, we caught many fish Then do everything in reverse to get back to the ship. I recommend this fishing trip. Chris & his son are very kind, patient, & knowledgeable. It was one of the high points of our whole cruise!
