Ask Our Team: Which Alaska Excursion Wouldn't Be Your First Choice?

Last Updated: Sep 29, 2026

There are a lot of great ways to experience Alaska, but that doesn't mean every excursion is right for every traveler.

Our team has been on tours where we thought, "I'd probably choose something different next time."  That doesn't necessarily mean the excursion wasn't good.  Sometimes it's simply a matter of what you enjoy, how much time you have, or what you want to get out of the experience.

So we asked our team: Which exursions wouldb't be your first choice, and what would you choose instead?

I would skip the Gold Creek Salmon Bake.  The forest setting is lovely, and the staff were very accommodating, but I wasn't a big fan of the meal itself.  I overheard other guests raving about the glaze on the salmon, but I found the brown sugar, honey and orange glaze to be way too sweet for my taste.   I've now tried five different food tours while traveling in Alaska, and this was my least favorite.  If you're looking for a food-focused experience, I'd choose Fishing & Wilderness Dining instead.  I'm also looking forward to the new Fireside Feast at Ward Cove, coming in 2027.  - Michelle

I would elect not to do the Ketchikan Highlights, Lumberjack Show & Saxman Native Village tour.  I've visited all three of Ketchikan's main totem parks, and Saxman was my least favorite.  It tends to be more crowded and, to me, feels more touristy.  Totem Bight and Potlatch Park have similar numbers of totems, but I prefer the scenery and the overall feel of both.  If seeing totems is high on your list,  I'd personally choose one a visit to Totem Bight State Park as part of the rainforest hike and totem park excursion. - Denise
