Skagway Chilkoot Horseback Adventure Tour

See the remains of what was once a city of 10,000 greedy stampeders as you wind your way through one of Alaska's most breathtaking valleys just as the original stampeders did...on horseback!

Your horseback riding adventure begins with a narrated tour by van through the historic town of Skagway out to our ranch in Dyea. Along the way you'll see some of Alaska's most beautiful back-country wilderness and part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Park.

Your Chilkoot exploration will begin deep in the heart of Dyea Valley and bring you to its original town site near the waterfront. Along the way your guides will enthrall you with stories of the area's gold rush history "Sourdough" style. You'll appreciate our gentle horses as you pose for a picture or watch the abundant wildlife. Riders of all experience levels are welcome to participate as no running of the horses is allowed on the trip; just an easy walk to give everyone plenty of time to enjoy the scenery.

When you've finished your trek on horseback, sit down with your guides as you enjoy a beverage and some of our famous alderwood smoked salmon pate!

Everyone was so nice and we had a great time!

The staff themselves were extremely knowledgeable and friendly; however, the tour itself was sort of boring because we did not go fast and just plodded along a trail just looking at woods and getting to know the personalities and names of the horses that we were all riding (and would never meet again). There was one section where it was pretty and we were on a plain but it was just all right. I could've been anywhere riding a horse.

We had a great time. Beautiful stroll through the wooded area and wonderful view of the mountains. Loved hearing about each horse and their personalities. Only thing to be careful of was our ship ported in Haines instead of Skagway and we had to take the $$$ fairy over.

A beautiful ride through the forest to the open flats. Horses well cared for and so gentle, great handlers. Made me feel like I was on the frontier. Thanks so much.

The crew and horses where all amazing from top to bottom. The knowledge of the guides on the surroundings and their knowledge of each horse's attitudes and tendencies was absolute professional. The only thing that we were slightly disappointed on was completely our fault. We expected the ride to be a more "off the beaten" remote trail. Something along a creek in the woods or out in a meadow , and possibly up a slight rise on a mountain or basically something that would put you in a more wild Alaska feeling. This trail was just down the side of gravel road with a few cars and other motorist meeting you. When we made our way out to the open part there were several other groups of people either fishing or sightseeing. We rested four 5 minutes and headed back. Not quite the trail ride we expected or are used to but that was completely our fault for not asking those questions before hand. Like I mentioned, the horses where great and the crew was great at telling stories and facts. Honestly we probably learned more on Alaska from that group than any other on the whole trip.

Great tour! Would highly recommend to anyone. My son's favorite part of our cruise. Horses were very gentle, rain forest was beautiful and so nice to see from a horse. Very personal experience. Guides were very helpful and knowledgeable. I had no experience with a horse, and yet did just fine. Our guide, Sarah, was totally in control and remained calm when a brown bear crossed our path just 100 ft. behind us. "Oh ... look it's a bear" she quietly said. We turned just in time to see it walk past. That is quite a memory! She provided fun narration and assistance throughout the tour. Concluded with hot chocolate and snacks.

Really enjoyed the horseback ride. Haven't been on a horse since I was a child but the horses were well behaved and I had no trouble controlling the horse. Riding through the forest and out onto the open flats was very relaxing and the scenery was beautiful.

This was a nice, relaxing time on our trip. Our guides were very informative, providing historical and current information while we rode through a peaceful setting. The tidal flats were a highlight, with amazing views and open spaces. This was a highlight of our time in Skagway.
