Discover the Alaskan Way and a hearty crab feast!

Spend a day getting to know everyday life in Hoonah with a local guide who knows the area well. Start at the water, where you may visit a commercial fishing boat and see the morning catch. Learn about the local fishing and crabbing industry, take a look at the gear, and, when available, choose fresh Dungeness crab for your meal later in the day.

From there, head out with your guide to explore the garden, berry patches, forest and shoreline around the village. Along the way, learn about the plants and foods locals gather and what it's like to live in this remote corner of Southeast Alaska. Your guide will adjust the pace and stops based on your group's interests, whether that's spending more time along the beach, exploring the garden and berry patches, or learning about local life. Keep an eye out for coastal brown bears, which are occasionally spotted in the area.

You may also have the opportunity to visit a local carving shed and watch a Tlingit wood carver at work. The carving shed is not always open, so this stop is dependent on the carver's schedule.

Come hungry for an Alaskan Dungeness crab feast

The day ends at Hoonah Beach House with fresh Dungeness crab served on a private deck overlooking the water. Get involved as your guide shows you how locals cook, clean and crack the crab, then sit back and enjoy the meal. Homemade dessert featuring wild Alaska berries foraged on the property is also served.

The deck is a great place to watch for wildlife, with bald eagles often in the area and humpback whales sometimes passing through the surrounding waters.
