For over twenty years, the Fortress of the Bear has rehabilitated and offered sanctuary for orphaned Coastal Brown and Black Bears. This is one of many stops on your small group adventure.

Sitka's history ranges from old Russian history to authentic Alaskan Native history. See and learn about multicultural sites from your local tour guide. Hear unique stories and perspectives from this little island town.

Informative, scenic, and comfortable transportation allows guests to see and experience the highlights of Sitka. Totem poles tower overhead at the Sitka National Historical Park. Guests should be comfortable stepping into and out of the Ford Transit high-roof van with a maximum capacity of 14 guests.

Requirements:

  • New for 2025: To avoid long wait times, guests are now required to book their complimentary shuttle to and from downtown Sitka in advance! Days that require a ticket will be highlighted in red. All guests should book a shuttle at least one hour before their scheduled tour departure time to ensure they have enough time to check in and be ready for their tour. On days not highlighted in red, a ticket is not required for the shuttle.

  • Guests must be comfortable getting in and out of a passenger van. There is no additional storage for strollers and wheelchairs.

Duration: 2.5 hours (Roundtrip from Harrigan Centennial Hall)

  • 50 minutes - total roundtrip transportation time to attractions and multiple scenic photo stops
  • 40 minutes - Sitka National Historical Park
  • 40 minutes - Fortress of the Bear
  • 15-20 minutes - Japonski Island photo stop

Meeting Instructions:

  • This tour departs from Harrigan Centennial Hall in downtown Sitka. Guests docking at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal will take a free shuttle to the downtown area. Fully detailed instructions are included on your finalized ticket vouchers.

There is open seating on the tour van, however if you require a certain seat due to a physical impairment then please inform your tour guide.

Wildlife is abundant in Southeast Alaska and sightings are possible on any tour. Bears will be viewable at the Fortress of the Bears stop during the tour.

There are no age restrictions for this tour. Guests under 2 years of age will sit on a parent or guardian's lap at no charge.

Backpacks, small bags, and purses are allowed on this tour.

Non-alcoholic beverages in closable containers and snacks are allowed on tour.

No food or drinks are included.

The transportation van does not have the capacity to accommodate most wheelchairs, collapsible or not, unfortunately.

Car seats are not offered for children at this time.

This was a wonderful tour ! Ann Marie s knowledge of Sitka and the surrounding areas is vast & it s shows in the details she provides on the tour. Since it was a small group, our conversations were easy to have & we had plenty of time to visit various sites.
